- What they do:
The index.html file includes several short JavaScripts and VBScripts. If scripting is turned off in the browser it returns a message telling the viewer to turn it on and instructing them how. Then the scripts are run to check for the presence of QuickTime on the user's system. If QT is present it loads (via a script) a very small (20K) QT movie. A script within the movie then checks for the version installed and if it is less than version 6 (the latest as of this writing), it returns a graphic compelling the viewer to upgrade. Basically it does all the work to validate the viewer's browser as having QuickTime and the correct (most recent) version of QuickTime installed.
How to use it:
Couldn't be simpler. If all is well and the browser is validated for QuickTime AND version, the QT movie looks for and launches a page named "main.html". SImply rename the first page of your site "main.html" and load the new index page, the movie and the PNG file into the root directory of your web server.
Distribution:
The QuickTime Deployment Kit (QDK) is distributed exclusively through QuickTiming.org, your ultimate resource for all things QuickTime. Since you've gone to all the trouble of downloading, however, you may feel free to distribute the QDK so long as you don't charge money for it, and as long as this read_me file accompanies it. If you do decide to distribute over the internet, please link to our download page, rather than hosting it on your local server. We do, after all, deserve to get the credit for coming up with this stuff.
