Stowe Ski Resort Review December 1999

Genteel and expensive sums up Stowe Mountain Ski Resort. On Boxing Day, the day after Christmas, there are never any lines. Perhaps this is not surprising when a day ticket costs $56.00. Of course, in this period of ever higher stock market prices,  such costs don't mean anything to some people. No matter that there is no expert terrain available. There never is without a couple of good snow falls and Stowe rarely gets those before Christmas. Please note that there is strong disagreement with this review!

The ski report touted 25 trails open, but that included all those little connectors that ski resorts love to throw in to boost their trail count. As one wag put it during a gondola conversation: ``There are only two ways you can go down today!" It seems that as prices keep going up, skiers become ever more cynical over the latest wriggles of the marketing mavens!

What Stowe Mountain does provide the Christmas and New Year's visitor is an atmosphere. Management makes sure that as many intermediate and beginner trails are open so that you can ``cruise down those slopes." The staff are trained well to be very polite and helpful. Customer service couldn't be better. And while there is no Brahms or Beethoven playing in the rest rooms, as is done at a place like Snowmass, the rest rooms are not cattle barns as they are at some resorts.

When you are hungry why not dine at the top of the mountain. A hamburger, a hot apple cider and a coffee will likely set you back $20.00 including tip. But again, the service is impeccable, the atmosphere genteel. Stowe has a reputation for that. It is a pity other resorts haven't realized this!

Lunch at the Cliff House Restaurant is usually at least $20.00 per person. Food and atmosphere is very nice.
