Quechee's annual Scottish Festival takes place every year on the Quechee polo field. In 1999, the festival celebrated its 27th year of operation You can reached the field easily off Route 4, a major highway that crosses the state and links Quechee with Woodstock, Killington and Rutland.

It costs under $10.00 per adult to enter the festival and park your car. That's a bargain these days and you get a whole day full of events from the colorful spectacle of massed marching bands to sheep dog trials, Scottish dancing, and something called Sheaf Throwing. Every now and again you catch a glimpse of some highlanders partaking in a ``wee dram."

The festival isn't that commercial and it's quite laid back. There is no hollering master of ceremonies urging you to do this and that. Instead, you are left to wander about and discover things for yourself.

There are no more than half a dozen vendors plying things Scottish, from highland regalia to Scottish music CDs and tapes. But, buyers beware. I was sold a CD without a disk inside it. Luckily I checked it before leaving the grounds and went back to complain. The woman who sold it to me was not embarrased at all.  ``Oh," she said, `` I have been looking for that empty case for a while now...thanks so much for bringing it back!" - Unbelievable! Oh well.
