Yes. I recommend the South trail. I hiked from the North trail but ended having to do 1/2 of the South trail and back so I could see the South Beach view.

From the NEK, Tim, recommended the South Trail too and that's what we are doing! We are finally doing Nichols Ledge! Do you have any photos of the overlook and how is that trail rated? Moderate? Thanks KC! CT

Nichol's ledge is still very green, with an occasional red tree here and there. I was up there two days ago. It's just a 10 minute uphill hike, which is very dry right now. The lower portion can get muddy after a rain.

KC: thank you. Uphill no worries for me! I hope the color is ok when we climb to the overlook. The only days I have open are when I am in Peacham as I am hiking with my friend. Looking at October 2, 3 or 4 early morning or mid afternoon. What do you recommend for time of day for best lighting?
Also, we are hiking to the fire tower on Spruce Mountain. Have you done this? Third day, hike to the overlook on Willoughby via the south trail.
Thanks for all your input!!! CT

I have not hiked Spruce Mountain yet. Nichol's is best after 900am unless you want to photograph the lakes covered in fog. The sun doesn't reach the lower areas till then. The bright hills and low areas in deep shadow make it difficult to get a nice photo even with HDR.
