I've done the Blue Ridge a couple of times in the fall. It's great. I see that you are driving from Tenn. to Asheville. If you are going through the Smoky Mountain Park, stop at a welcome center and ask about Cade's Cove. I did it a few years ago and I loved it ! It was an old farming community that was taken over by the US Park System. They have preserved all of the building and the water powered grist mill is still working. You may need to bring a lunch. It will take most of a day to do and there are no restuarants.

I drive down through that areathe last week of October to get to my Winter Quarters in St. Augustine, FL. I find that the colors are fading about that time. I think the 3rd week of October may be better.

Most of the best pizza is found in the North End. the North End is a wonderful neighborhood that I highly recommend (the Freedom Walk goes through it and it is home to Paul Revere's House, the Old North Church, the Copping Burial ground and too many amazing sites to mention). Among them are Galleria Humberto (you have to come in early as they make dough once and once they run out, they close. I got there at 10 'til 11 am and the line was to the door. Walked by a little after 2 pm and they were already closed) and Regina (classic neighborhood place with very good pizza and really friendly staff). That said, it is an old school New England neighborhood so, unless you can park and walk (wouldn't try to drive through its narrow streets), probably a pass (and it sounds like you are just passing through).

For a quick stop, I recommend the East Boston location of Santarpio's (they just have two locations). It is right by the airport and conveniently right off the freeway. Best pizza I have had in Boston and current in my top five nationwide (on a top 5 note, if anyone is in New Orleans, please try Pizza Delicious which I tried recently and is "make you cry" good). Thanks so much Dean! We've done the Freedom trail several times in years past with our kids. Love the Italian neighborhoods where Paul Revere's house is, what great place to just stroll. Had the best cannolli(sp?) there and pizza but I don't remember where it was. The picture you posted looks yummy! We'll denfinitely check it out.
