Kinsman Notch is a beautiful ride! I hear it is also an area where you can often find moose. I would second the recommendation for the Woodstock Inn... I've eaten brunch there, and the sticky buns are to die for! I've only eaten dinner in the Woodstock Station portion of the area, but everything on that menu is delicious, so I imagine the Inn food is as well. I'm also hoping Govoni's Italian Restaurant is open again this year, just west of N. Woodstock on Rte. 112 along the gorge. I finally tried it last year and was quite impressed. They had been closed the previous year, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Another great spot near Woodstock, NH is Russell Pond. It's off of Tripoli Road (1 exit south of Rte. 112 off 93); follow the signs for the Russell Pond campground. You can drive right through the campground to a parking area by the edge of the pond. I was there early morning last fall, and it was beautiful:

If I get time I wish to visit Dixville Notch and the Pittsburg area.

What is the best route to get there from Gorham NH. Route 16 or Route 3

Any suggestions about the sights along the road please

RK; I prefer driving routes 16 and 26 to Colebrook and route 145 from Colebrook to Pittsburg. When route 26 ends on Main Street in Colebrook turn right and drive about 1/4 mile and look for route 145 on the right. There is not route sigm at route 245, but there is one of those blue hospital signs there. You will love 145. Water Falls, nice long views and a whoop de do in Clarksville.

Just came back from White Mountains Trip (October 4,5)

First things first. I would say reading this forum and dreaming about the trip for last 3 weeks was as much fun if not more than the trip itself .

Wonderful forum.

PWT : Thanks for helping me chart out the trip for last 2 weeks. Bear Notch is a great drive with 3 amazing overlooks. Thanks a Ton.

WXMAN76 : Thanks for your weather Report.

Abby : Thanks a lot for your advice about the kinsman notch . I visited it and the beaver pond and it is just amazing. Unfortunatley I did not get a chance to visit the Northern NH.

Quick Report :

Colors everywhere in White mountain region are Great.

Kancamagus, Franconia Notch , Crawford notch are at their best.

I drove the Mount Washington Auto Road and must say it is really scary in places. Was lucky to have a sunny afternoon on Saturday. View are awesome.

I drove route 2 Presidential highway west of Gorham. There I read a sign for Jefferson Notch going to 302. could not explore it as it is unpaved and was getting Dark. Anybody been there ?

Now the Vermont Report.
Yesterday while driving back home, I could not resist going to Vermont.

From Kinsman notch I drove 302 west and colors were great. I took I 89 to Route 100 to Warren . I -89 has amazing vies of the mountains ( I think Mount Mansfield).

I drove from Warren to Ludlow. Colors were great . then I took route 7 and could see amazing colors at Sunset near Manchester.

I've been through Jefferson Notch a few times, and the road is a well-maintained dirt road. There are several trailheads up there, so there's usually a fair amount of traffic.

Are there any roadside Overlooks on that road which do not require any hikes. Will explore it next time I visit Whites.

I'm not sure about the overlooks. There are really no "pulloffs" for overlooks, but there may be a couple of areas with views if you pull over at the side of the road. It's a very "woodsy" drive, not a lot of long views, but several streams, brooks, small waterfalls, etc. along the road. I will see if I can find a photo to post, although I think it's been a couple of years since I traveled that road.
