Colors of Vermont

Well, I took Charles's advice and drove to Somerset Reservoir in southern Vermont today (and back to New Jersey). It was a 500 mile round trip, but it was worth it!

I not only went to the reservoir, but also took Somerset Road to the end, and then went up a dirt road in my 4WD truck and nearly got lost in the woods. But oh, what gorgeous woods they are!

I've posted two images to my Web gallery so far. Here they are. Not as nice as Charles's, but I'll get there!

If you want to see others, here's my Web gallery. I'll post more to my gallery in the coming days. Thanks for looking!

Hey Florindo,

Glad you made it up okay! Nice shots too. The first looks like the lower reservoir where I sent you; the water was not quite as calm as I hoped it would be for you but it appears you got there a bit early in the day (the water doesn't soften until after sunset).

The second shot.. I have no idea what that is. :) what road did you go down?

I went down Somerset Road and made a left about half-way up (just as the "No Parking" signs appeared) onto Castle Brook Rd, or so my GPS told me. But after some time on that road it no longer had a name, and it got really, really hairy. Like I mentioned, without a robust 4WD it can't be navigated. I was on that road for a total of 50 minutes in each direction, at around 5 mph. It was at the end of that 50 minutes going out onto the road that I came across that scene you see in the second picture. Great place.

Great photos. Likes like they are near peak down there. Maybe next weekend. Things are moving fast up. Probably the last good weekend. Sounds like you ended up in Glastenbury. Good thing you brought your GPS. We've lost a lot of good folks in Glastenbury. :p

I would definitely say that it has reached peak around that immediate area of the reservoir and river, but as I wandered down that road, the leaves I could see from the dirt road were not as colorful as near the water edge.

In fact, a lot of the leaves were falling off the trees, and it really wasn't that windy on Saturday.

I need to find a job up in that neck of the country.

I have given up on trying to figure out what "peak" means. To me, this area is already starting to look past peak, because many of the trees are getting bare and a lot of leaves are on the ground. You folks are saying we are nearing peak but I would bet in a week from now only a quarter of the trees will have any leaves left. The first picture Florindo took has more green than most of the rest of the reservoir.

How does one know what is peak? :)
