Foliage is getting started early this year

The foliage color is begining to appear all over Vermont. Most observers say that the color is appearing about a week early. Also, the color seems more vibrant this year. This could be because of far less rainfall this summer and spring. Many of the streams and brooks are showing very low water levels. You will be able to experience the color all over Vermont put particularly in higher terrain. Also the color is progressing in the usual way, starting off in the Northeast Kingdom and along the spine of the Green Mountains. Colder temperatures and several frosts are forecast for the weekend. Here is a typical example of what it is looking like in Newport today, which is in the northeast of Vermont, often where the color first appears. Click here to go full screen!

Hi.

I saw you mentioned Newport, VT.
As I was re-reading the Autumn, 1984 edition of Vermont Life, I came across an article that mentions "Lake Memphremagog".
It is an excellent article with pictures that discusses research and traveling on/around an old stagecoach road that ran from Montpelier to Derby Line, then on into Canada.
It mentions going past the lake and the Newport area.
One of the vantage points is Shattuck Hill.
Are you familiar with any of this?

I'm heading up to Vermont sometime in the next week. I'm not sure where I am going, but that will probably be it for me. I'm going to Western Maine on 10/5 - 10/7 with my son for Fall foliage. I've never been to Maine for Fall foliage before, so I'm looking forward to it. Maine allows lodging for folks from Connecticut, while Vermont does not, at least not from my county, without a 14 day quarantine. I live close enough to Vermont to not need lodging, not so much in Maine.

Loafer, around the 5th is usually good timing for Quill Hill in Rangeley, ME. It's a spectacular 360 degree view. It's $10 per car and $5 per additional person to go up, but it is worth it. Maine has a had a bit more rain than us in NH, so I imagine the leaves will last longer. The foliage report I got says they are on schedule. I was hoping to get over to north western Maine this year, but I don't think I'm going to make it. I'm going to NEK today, hopefully I'll find some good color. I will report back later on that.

The foliage around Sugarloaf looks to be about a week early. According to the webcams, the upper mountain is near peak, and about 30-50% on the lower mountain. I'm not sure this will last 10 days until we get there. It was in the upper 20's earlier this week, and the color went from mostly green to color really fast.

My travel plan right now, is going up on 1-91, to Route 2 and to Bethel and Sunday River, continuing on 2 and Route 17 and 16 to Rangeley and Stratton. I'm undecided past that point. Maybe we'll go to Jackman

I just watched a youtube video series of an Appalachian Trail hiker who was in Rangeley a few days ago (perhaps 09-28?).
The colors on the trail are starting to look really nice, but there seems the peak has not arrived.
