SW Vermont Update - 10/1/10

Took a drive through Bennington and across half of route 9 today.

The highlands of route 9 are pre-peak, peak and past peak depending on where you are... but mostly past peak. A lot of leaf drop. I'd say most areas are 80-90% changed with 50% or more leaf drop. There are still some nice spots, but overall this has not been a great year and we're well on our way to "stick season" at the higher elevations.

In the valley we had high winds last night and a lot of our early color is now on the ground. I do think there's enough time that over the next couple of weeks we will get more leaf change and perhaps have a decent season, depending on how things work out.

Well, the good news is that it's still pretty, and I think we got more wind than northern VT did, which is where most people are headed.

Thanks so much ixl, your report really is valuable and assists others planning their drives around Vermont during the short period of time we have access to seeing Vermont in her Autumn glory. Hope others will send in updates wherever they are finding nice foliage. Want to check out Groton State Forest and NEK's nice drives but like many who are not locals, updates really are helpful. Hope the SOV group had a nice time together and will have some updates to share on the Forum. Anyone have updates from Stowe, Hazen Notch, Montgomery, Jay Peak, NE Kingdom, Woodstock, Quechee, Okemo?
Again, thanks Ixl

Was hoping to spend some time down in the SW corner next weekend. Any updates on Manchester / Danby / Pawlet?

I haven't been up that way in a while. My guess is that the color is not going to be great, simply because they were probably further ahead than we were and lost more leaves, but that's just a guess.

Thanks Charles! Sounds like this year will be a "miss," but such is life. :)
