Last week (the 7th through the 12th)

The only thing really missing are the deep reds. Gold, yellow, ochre colors are all there.
We never saw the sun - 5 days of overcast.
We traveled from Grafton on the south to Hardwick in the north. Smuggler's notch on the south side was fabulous (again - no deep reds).
The NE Kingdom is now experiencing some to medium leaf drop.
The lower reaches of Highway 100 on both sides up and down the various gaps are all worth driving.
Woodstock, Weston and Grafton - all quaint towns are all experiencing fall colors without the reds. I think the southern part of Vermont now will be migrating into peak (golds, deep oranges).
This has simply been "one of those years" where the colors didn't fully develop. This is my 5th year and, yes, there have been more "robust" colors but Vermont always has a photographic side to it. That is, if you are a photographer. Here are a few photos from Tuesday and Wednesday - the colors are a little washed and don't represent the real beauty primarily due to the extreme overcasts.
Vermont
At any rate, the trip is worth it - you might have to get off the beaten path - get to some higher elevations and you'll be satisfied with your trip.
Safe travels....!
