Heading up there this weekend. What are some of the nicest villages around? Where you can stroll around town....

Grafton is one of the nicer villages for strolling. There's no major road through it, the utilities are underground and the buildings well preserved. It only takes 30 minutes to cover it all though, excluding stops, but there's a park above town you can walk to. Chester, 7 miles north, is also ok for strolling, although it's only a few blocks long.

North Bennington is interesting, but a mix of old and new. Old Bennington is very scenic, and not bad walking around the Battle Monument, but it's only a few blocks and you're soon out of the interesting area.

Shaftsbury and Arlington are both scenic, but about a 2 minute stroll each, if that.

Manchester Village is nice for walking, although small, and you can extend the walk by going into Dellwood Cemetary/Hildene or on the paths along the flanks of Mt. Equinox behind the Equinox Hotel. The outlets and commercial development are down the road a mile in Manchester Center, and separate from Manchester Village.
