The best colors will be in the northeast corner of Vermont. The fastest way to get there is to take I-89 to exit 8 in Montpelier. Take route US 2 east from Montpelier to I-91 in St.Johnsbury. Take I-91 North to exit 23 in Lyndonville and turn right. Drive route US 5 through Lyndonville Village to route 114 and drive route 114 north to the junction of route 105 and turn left. Drive route 105 west to route 5A and drive route 5A south to the end at route US 5 in West Burke. Turn left and drive route US 5 south back to the junction of route 114 and this time turn right onto route 122. Drive route 122 to the end at route 16 and turn left and drive route 16 south to the end at route 15. Turn right and drive route 15 west to the traffic light in Morrisville,VT. Now you could drive route 15 west all the way to Winooski,Vt near Burlington, or turn left at the light and drive route 100 south back to I-89 and head back to Burlington. You will have to go by Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream Factory this way, so think it over.

Route 100 north of route 15 in Hyde Park is looking good right now and should be peak this weekend. route 58 west of route 100 in Lowell,VT. through hazen's notch(a mostly dirt road)is gorgeous right now.

It will be a long day. An alternative for you would be to take I-89 south to exit 10 and turn left to get to Stowe,VT. Take route 108 north through Smuggler's Notch to route 15 in Jeffersonville. In Jeffersonville route 108 splits at Main Street. Bear right and folow Main St. around to the end at route 15. Go straight on route 108 north and look for route 109 on the right side. Turn right onto route 109 north. (colors are better on 109 than 108) As you come into Waterville village you will see a "church" on the right with a clock. Take the street acroos from the "church" to see a covered bridge. Go back to RT.109 and turn left. You will see another covered bridge on the right next to the road about 3 miles ahead. There are 3 more covered bridges but time may be a problem. If you want to chance it check my answer in the "Vermont Oct. 3 - 8" post for the directions. When you come to the end of route 109 at route 118 turn right and go about a mile to check out Long Pond. Turn around and drive Rt. 118 back past route 109. If you read the " Vermont Oct. 3 - 8" post you notice there is another covered bridge on the South Brook & Hutchins Roads. If you want to make this a covered bridge ride follow the directions in the "Vermont Oct. 3 - 8" post and at the end of route 118 turn left and take route 105 west to I-89 in St.Albans. If not, then when you come into Montgomery Center you will see 2 state roads on the right. The first is route 58 east through Hazen's Notch. This a mostly dirt road to route 100 in Lowell. This is a great ride and the colors east of the notch are peak. If dirt "ain't yer thing", drive another 100 feet and turn right onto route 242 east. (you might want to get a bite to eat in Montgomery Center first) Route 242 is a great paved road going by Jay Peak and folks are telling that it is near peak up there. Route 242 ends at route 101 south. Turn right on route 101 south and drive that to route 100 south in Troy. (if you didn't eat in Montgomery Center you'd better eat at the Junction 101 Restuarant) Bear right and take route 100 south. Drive route 100 south to route 15. At route 15,if you turn right you can take route 15 west to I-89 in Winooski. If you turn left you can take route 100 south through Morrisville and Stowe and pick up I-89 in Watebury.

With the rain we might be getting tonight, you might want to skip the Covered Bridge off the West Hill Road in Montgomery. The colors are there and waiting for you. I talked to 3 different "leafpeepers yesterday who came from that area and they were thrilled with the colors.
