Despite what was described as poor conditions, I had a great time last year on a photo vacation to VT, NH and ME. So much so that I'm returning this year in hopes of catching sunny skies. I'm flying into Manchester, but will be staying near Burlington, VT October 2-3 and near Lincoln, NH October 4-5.

The new toy this year is a GPS so I'm wondering if people have lat/long of particularly good photographic spots. My understanding is that the best place for color that time of year will be the northern parts of the state and at elevation.

I'm not looking to take long (many miles) hikes, but if there are parks, etc. with a short hike to something noteworthy I'd be very interested.

(Even if you don't have the GPS coordinates, suggestions for an Oct 1-6 trip in those areas would of course be appreciated.)

You can drive to the top of Mt. Mansfield from route 108 in Stowe. The toll road starts behind the Inn at the Mountain. Or you can take the gondola up up 3/4 of the way and hike the rest. You might want to try Groton State Park. The hike up to Owl's Head Mountain is short and has good views. The colors in the Park are very good. The hike up Elmore Mountain in Elmore State Park is moderate in scale and the view from the fire tower is very good. If you haven't been to Mt. Philo State Park in Charlotte,Vt. you should give it a try.

Last year I was in the area Oct 9-12. Driving through the White Mountain region, things seemed just a little past peak in a few places. So this year I planned the trip for Oct 1-6. Now I'm reading stories about unseasonably warm temperatures and a late change of color.

How worried should I be?

Things are looking normal so far. The first week of october is a great time for foliage no matter the temperature.
