I am going to be up in the Rutland, VT area from October 13 - 15 for the Foliage. I was hoping to get some specifics from our reader's on where to go.
I have found many generalization's about what highways to ride on, but I wanted to see if I can narrow down the possibilities since I want to be as productive as possible over the 3 days.
Covered bridges, water and mountains. There is a lot up there to see and I would appreciate any insight on specific places to go that might not be a tourist nightmare that week.
Also, if any reader's are up there at this time for the same purpose, perhaps we can tackle such as a group....Thanks..Rick

For mountains, you can drive to the top of Mt. Equinox in Manchester,Vt. Pickup the Skyline Drive off route 7A south of Manchester. You can drive to the top of Mt Ascutney near Windsor ,Vt. Pick up the toll road off route 44A. For covered bridges; take route 3 north from route US 4 in Center Rutland. Drive route 3 through Proctor and look for the Gorham Bridge Road on the left. Drive that road past Elm Street on the right side until you come to the Bridge. After you are done drive back to Elm Street and take that to the next Bridge. Finish Elm Street to the end at route US 7 and turn left. Look for Depot Hill Rd on the left by the store. Drive that to the next Bridge. Finish the Depot Hill Rd to the end at the Florence Road and turn right. After you go through the narrow railroad overpass bear right. In about a 1/4 mile you will see the next Bridge on the right off the Kendall Hill Road. Go back to the road you came from and turn right.n Drive along until you see Mack's Sawmill Road on the right and take that road a short way until you see the Short Swamp Road on your right. Take that to the end and turn right and drive to the last Bridge. Finish that road to route US 7 in Brandon. There is a covered bridge and a gorge in Clarendon, Vt. south of Rutland. Take route US 7 south from Rutland until you come to route 103 east. Drive route 103 past route 7B and look for the Airport Road on the right. Drive the Airport Road about 3 miles and look for the Gorge Road on you right. Drive the Gorge Rd a short way and look for East Street on your left. The bridge is there. After you finish the Bridge go back to the Gorge Rd and turn right. When you get back to the Airport Rd turn right and finish that road to route 103 and turn right. The Clarendon Gorge is down thw road a ways. For directions for this and other falls check out

Ther are 2 covered bridges in Arlington. One is off route 313 and can be seen from the road. The other one is on the East Arlington Road. It starts off route 7A in Arlington Village. There are 3 in Bennington. All are off route 67A. The first one is on the Silk Road on the left side of route 67A. Go back to route 67A and turn left. look for the Murphy Road on the left side. There are 2 on this road. I hope that is a good start for you.

You give such good information, PWT. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with all on the Forum.
Can you tell me how to print posts, such as yours, that give such excellent directions for scenic drives? I have not figured how to print them. I would like to print just a single post, rather than four or five, and just get the one reply of a post topic.
Just thought I would ask as it would be a help to me. Thanks!
Kerry

Kerry, I copy and paste most of everything off the internet. If you do that you can do things like "bold" the route numbers, enlarge the fonts and of course, correct the spelling. Rick; it depends on the weather. On a rainy day you may want to do indoors things like museums or factory tours. Thoses covered bridges near Rutland will not take a whole day. One thing I love to do on a nice day is watch the snow geese at the Dead Creek Wildlife Area on route 17 west of Addison. To get there take route 73 west ,after you finish the last bridge, and drive that to route 30 and turn left. Drive route 30 south until you see route 73 west agiain on the right. Drive route 73 west until you come to the junction of route 22A in Orwell and turn right. Drive route 22A north until you come to the junction of route 17 in Addison and turn left. Drive route 17 west about a mile and you'll the geese on the left. One route I enjoy is route 133 from West Rutland all the way down to route 30 in Pawlet. Route 30 itself is a great ride. The mountain I mention are great on nice days. Just don't be surprised if there is snow on the ground. By the way, if you or anyone else reading this post is in the Ludlow area, take route 100 north a few miles to the Green Mountain Sugarhouse and try their maple cree-mee. They are great!
