I'd say this site exaggerated the state of the color in southern Vermont. Sunday, Oct 5 we explored as far as Killington and there was some yellow but hardly any red. The map showing peak just isn't corrrect. Maybe check another site before planning a trip.

Yeah, it's about a week and 1/2 too early that far south. Foliage is running a bit late this year. It's unusual for there to be snow on Mt. Killington and the leaves still green down below.

The foliage maps on www.foliage-vermont.com are an approximate indication of foliage's progression. This is stated several times on pages that carry these maps. It is impossible to predict with day to day or even week to week accuracy. There are just too many variables. This forum is intended to augment the information found in the state foliage reports and on the maps. Having said this, I can definitely say that there were some areas in southern and central Vermont that were very close to peak this past weekend. If you were in the Rochester area, for example, you would have seen the color, albeit shrouded in mist and rain. During the next week, the "North Bowl," as I believe it is termed, will be spectacular!

Altitude is always a major factor in foliage viewing. If you are disappointed in the colour and feel that you are in a location too early, head for higher altitude and you will invariably find it.

So, off 89, head into Bethel, then over Rochester Mountain towards Rochester. In the next couple of days you will see foliage and a panorama there like you never have seen!

Just to add to this -

Past weekend (4th and 5th), I was in Vermont. I am not very sure if it was peak ( I am from India and this is only the second fall season that I have been here), but we saw some spectacular colours near Jerusalem, Lincon and Ripton. There is an unpaved road from Jerusalem to all the way down to Goshan (some one who knows Vermont geography better can correct the facts about roads etc., but if some one is visiting Vermont in the next couple of days and staying in southern/central Vt. I would highly recommend this route) which goes through the green mountains and colours were very good in some parts. We saw some very good colours on Rt. 100 between Bondville and Killington too. Rt. 125 was brilliant. Some part of Rt 11 was very good. Rt 30 also has excellent colours in pockets.

You drove on some great dirt roads. It sounds like you took the road from Jerusalem to Lincoln and then maybe the East Hill Road to the Ripton Road to route 125 in Ripton. From there you might have taken the Mooslamoo Road to Goshen.
