We traveled from Albany to Lake Placid yesterday via routes 7, 9, and 100, before turning west back into New York on route 4. The plan was to ride the lifts at Mt. Snow and Stratton, stop at the Vermont Country Store, and then Killington. However, we found the foliage most of the way to Killington rather "subdued". I'd have to say green was the predominant color with a blend of yellows, golds, and soft oranges. Nice, but not spectacular. The color definitely improved as we traveled north, but few brilliant reds. We decided the foliage was not "lift-worthy" and skipped Mt. Snow and Stratton, not stopping until the Vermont Country Store.

As an aside, the prices aren't getting any lower at the VCS, are they? I justified dropping $65 on a few items by telling myself that I'm sure the store is completely empty the rest of the year. :)

Killington was better, but still a mixed bag. Depending where you looked, everything from what I would call just barely turning to past peak. Still beautiful and well-worth a look, though. I overheard someone in the bike shop asking if it was pre-peak or past-peak. The response was that it was past-peak. Again, I would say it depends on which direction and elevation you're looking.

Views continued to improve on the way to back into New York. Unfortunately, it got dark while we were still about an hour from Lake Placid so I can't comment on the conditions yet. We traveled some very lonely roads from Killington to Lake Placid and when it's getting dark it's a mix of slowing to catch the last glimpses of the trees and speeding up because you start worrying about what would happen if the car broke down in the middle of nowhere. :?

It's a beautiful day in LP so far. I'll report further, time permitting.

Thanks again to ctyanky for the ski lifts suggestion.
