In David Middleton's Photographer's Guide to Vermont, he mentions the bikepath from Colchester Point to South Hero island as a nice sunset spot. He also mentions Mt Philo.

What dates? Early in the season you need to be higher up, later, lower down. There's lots of great places all over the area.

Krishna: Mt. Philo is certainly worth going to. I went there last fall with bm, a moderator here on the forum, on a day trip. This is her territory and she hikes there almost every week! The view from the top is beyond amazing. You can see the whole valley! The valley itself was not yet in peak as I was there the first day of October. I'm not sure on the color timing, but the views are breathtaking. The drive up the mountain was great. I'm sure she will chime in and I know she has great photos.
There are benches at the top to sit and relax, and a short hike to the overlook from the parking lot is a breeze. I think there were two park ranger cabins up there as well. Not a lot of hikers and we ended up chaining the gate to close access to the mountain ourselves when we left. A little difficult, but between the two of us, (mostly bm
) we figured it out! Very trustworthy of the ranger!
Here is the link from VT state parks that rates Mt. Philo in the top five for views:

Thanks, I'll be in Burke from October 5th-7th and then in Stowe area from October 7th-9th. I was thinking to go to Lake Chaplain if the foliage season in the north has passed the peak color change.

Some of the good rides along the lake with some good foliage are in the area between Ferrisburg and Shoreham. Go to Vergennes City and take route 22a south (Main St.) over the bridge over Otter Creek and look for the Panton Road on the right. Drive that road until you see the Basin Harbor Road on the right and take that road. Drive that road until you come to the Button Bay Road on the left and take that road. Drive that road until you come to the Arnold Bay Road on the right and take that road to the end at Lake Road and bear right. Drive the Lake road to the end at route 17 and bear right. Drive route 17 west until you come to route 125 on the left, next to the Bridge Restuarant (great place to eat). Drive route 125 about 5 miles and look for Lake Street on the right. Take Lake Street to the end at Watch Point Road and turn left onto Watch Point Road and drive that to the end at route 74 in Shoreham. There are no more lake side drives after here. I would probably take routes 74 and 73 to route 30 north abd drive route 30 north to Middlebury.
