Scenes of Vermont Forums

Hello all,

This forum is absolutely fantastic! I thank the moderators and the contributors for keeping it alive.

I am from NYC and we plan to drive up to Vermont on Oct 9 (tomorrow) and would be there until Oct 11. Our sole purpose is to enjoy the foliage!

This is the first time we are ever visiting Vermont and could use some help. Could you suggest what region would be best foliage-wise this weekend and also any scenic routes to drive or any other activity. I know some of these questions are covered in previous threads. But since all foliage websites are not in agreement as to the foliage conditions in Vermont, I thought I'd approach you guys.

Any help, tips would be truly appreciated.

As bm said.. nearly everywhere will be great this weekend, except for the very far northern areas at the top elevations, and along the edges of the state.

Anywhere specific you want to go?

I guess doing Mount Equinox Skyline Drive(Toll Road) near Manchester will be good at that time as it is in southern part .

I did it last year on October 5th and it was great. I am not sure about the current conditions there though.

This is Raj. I am new to this forum I didn't want to start another thread for the similar subject

even I plan to visit VT this weekend, I will be driving from NJ, I did spend some time on exploring VT on the web and in this superb forum.

this is what I have in my mind for the weekend

1. travel on 87 N --> Green Mtn Ntl Forest on 7 -> ludlow 100N -> woodstock 4-> sleepy hollow

2. Take county roads to goto Groton State forest on 232 N -> Rt 15 St. albans

Second day I am planning to visit all 6 gaps in th VT, I even managed to route them in Google, 6 gaps idea was taken from a Bike marathons site, credit should go to those folks

from what I heard we can see the best colors or views from GAPS, thats why I have decided to loop through all the GAPS, is it a good idea

Please suggest any changes

only thing is I am missing island Pond, am I missing anything.

Thanks for the reply ixl. I am not looking to cover any specific location quite simply because I do not know much about Vermont. I am trying to figure out whats the most scenic route to drive on tomorrow! Thanks again for your help.

I'm late for dea but I can help rp92285. I would take route 100 north from route 9 in Wilmington, VT instead of route US 7. Taking the back roads to Groton will take a long time. I would take route 12 north from Woodstock to route US 2 in Montpelier and then take route US 2 east to route 232 for the Groton State Forest. Colors there do turn early, so if the colors are not that good, try the Peacham area. For that, finish route 232 to route 302 and turn left. Drive route 302 to Groton village and look for the Minard Hill Road on the left. Drive that to Peacham. Color was still early in St.Albans yesterday, but the colors on routes 108, 36, and 104 were good.

Thanks pwt54 for your suggestion, I did go to peacham, ricker, 108, and 232. I didn't get time to visit any of the vermont GAPs as I expected, I drove around 1000 miles in 3 days. I have to visit again during the next season. I had good time, I captured some of the best scenes.
