My wife and I are going to Vermont next month for fall foliage. We will be arriving in Boston on Wednesday night Oct. 7 and we will drive to Vermont the next day. We are going to stay in Vermont from Oct 8 - Oct 11. We desperately need your help!! My wife and I have been dreaming about this trip for a long, long time and I hope we would make the best of it. We would like to know where are the good places to see color during this time of year. As long as we get to see the beautiful fall foliage by the lakes, the mountains, or on the highways, we really don't care where we are going to stay or which routes to take or drive. Thank you!

I'm sure others will chime in with responses as well, but you will have no trouble finding fall color that weekend in Vermont. For the last several years, I have visited over Columbus Day weekend, and I have based myself in White River Junction. I find the advantage to staying there is that you have many choices in terms of directions to head in to find the best color. If the color is further north, you can head north on Rte. 91; further south, head to the middle of the state and pick up Rte. 100 south. Like I said, others will surely have more advice, but you'll definitely see color!

Base yourself along the route US 4 corridor between White River Junction and Rutland and drive around a little north and south of this corridor. Route 100 north may not be great north of Waitsfield but south of there it will be good. Routes 12 to Montpelier and route 14 to Barre should be good. Routes 35 44,103,106, 121 and131 south of Woodstock should be nice. Because of the warmer climate, the area west of route US 7 may not be ready. You will find good color in one or all of these areas.

The trails in the Marsh-Billings- Rockefeller NHP are really nice. Check with the locals because there are a lpt of trails I don't know about down there.
