You should be able to get a room on the 15th but I would try to reserve early. You should do the Peacham/Barnet area. There are both paved and dirt roads there and some great views all around. I would consentrate my trips to the area between US2 and US4. Routes would be 14,110,113,132, and route 65 to the Brookfield Floating Bridge. Foliage is running a little late this year so that area should be near peak on the 15th.

From NH you can drive to and from a lot of places in eastern Vermont in a day, so even though you are not staying in Vermont, you can see it every day. In Vermont I like Queechee, White River Junction and Woodstock area. It is in mid east area. If you can't find anything else the Ascutny Mountain Resort is nice. A bit away from the populated towns, but not a bad drive to get to a main road to go north or south. I have stayed there 4 times and it is nice. Book as soon as you can. Most people are leaving Columbus Day and the hotels should have rooms on the 15th on, but more and more people are going so it is best to book ASAP.
Have fun.

It'll be nice time to come here. The Rte 5 corridor along the Connecticut river has some wonderful villages and museums. esp. the Precision Museum in Windsor and the Windsor historical museum.
Some lodging willbe available on a walk in basis since it is a week day, but the better places will not have much available. so if you're at all discerning its best to reserve early. It seems you already have some idea of the demand from trying to book a three night stay on Columbus Day weekend.
Some places may still have availability trfor that weekend, but you gotta wonder why when the better places have that time period sold out by June usually.
Enjoy the drive, and take advantage of our slower pacing Image
------------------
Aleks & Michiko Hunter
Old Town Farm Inn
665 Vt. Hi! I know this may be too late, as I just got on board to reply to questions, etc. Today being the 14th you are probably on the "road". We are in the northeast part of Vermont, off I-91, exit 25 Barton. Believe it or not, the foliage continues to be beautiful, bright, etc. Inspite of the cold nights, and today a cold day, it remains breathtaking. Should you be this far north, consider staying in this area for a day or two. You could contact our local chamber for rooms, etc. bartonareachamber.com
"we like to share vermont"
