I am going to leave something there for you (deo volente), a wee parcel, to thank you for all your attention to my questions.I would love to do the same for all the responders, but obviously can't as I don't know where you are - but many thanks to you all. Hi, Deb:

I told you I would get back to you on a couple places you will go. Here is some more information that might be of help to you.

In Woodstock, just be sure and walk the village. It is such a peaceful and delightful place and has a lot of nice shops. Bentley's is a nice, casual restaurant right in the center of the village. The same people own Firestones, about 4 miles to the East on Rt. 4. I actually like Firestones better. Their menu is more varied and it is not as crowded.

In Woodstock, be sure and walk through Gillingham's Hardware. It is one of the oldest hardware stores around and a very interesting place to just browse through their varied merchandise. If you are in Quechee during the day, be sure and see the Quecheee Gorge and the Simon Pearce glass blowing factory and store. On the common area adjacent to the Gorge, look for a man cooking corn on the cob over an open fire. Stop and buy an ear of it as it is delicious. He cooks it right there and puts some special butter and seasonings on it. I can taste it right now!

As you travel from Woodstock to Stowe, I suggest you take Rt. 12 north. You will come to the town of Bethel in about 16 miles or so. Continue on Rt. 12 for 3 miles until you come to a road to the left. That is Rochester Mtn Road and is a beautiful drive usually, if theire is some foliage peepeing through. Follow it to Rochester and Rt. 100. Turn right and take 100 all the way to Stowe. If you reach Warren around lunch time, turn off to the right and go into the villiage and have lunch at the Warren Store. Great Clam Chowder and a great setting!

In Waterbury, just south of Stowe on Rt. 100, you might would enjoy the Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream Factory. They have a tour, but it can be fairly crowded. You may want to skip the tour and just see the Ice Cream Cemetery and buy a cone of cream at the scoop shop there. Be sure, too, to stop at the Cold Hollow Apple Cider store. You can watch them squeeze fresh apple cider and their Apple Cider Donuts are delicious. Get them hot right out of the cooker!

Be sure and take Rt. 108 north out of Stowe and drive up to Smugglers Notch. It is a beautiful drive. Also, the Trapp Family Lodge is a nice place to visit. They have a nice shop there and the view from the front of their property is great. Stowe is a pleasant village to walk around, too.

When you drive from Stowe across to Bethel, ME, let me suggest a scenic route for you. Do not take Rt. 2 all the way to Bethel. Take a diversion route through the White Mountains in New Hampshire. From Montpelier, follow Rt. 2 east to Exit 21. Take I-91 South to the second Exit, #19, and pick up I-93 East and South. This is a beautiful drive towards Mt. Washington. When you get to Bethlehem, take Rt. 302 East.

In about a dozen miles or so, you will come to the historic Mt. Washington Hotel on your left, in Bretton Woods. You can't miss it. It is a hugh white building with a red roof and sits just beneath Mt. Washington. Take a drive up to the hotel and just walk around a little as it is quite a place to see! It has a porch around it that is 900 feet lone.

Continue on Rt. 302 until you come to the intersection with Rt. 16 in Glen. The drive from Mt. Washington Hotel down through the mountains to Glen is a tremendous scenic drive and you will enjoy it. At Rt. 16, turn left and north and this will take you back to Rt. 2. Turn right and east on Rt. 2 and then will lead you straight to Bethel, ME.

From Bethel, the best route to Freeport is to follow Rt. 26 to Gray, about 60 miles. At Gray, turn left on Rt. 115 and follow that about ten miles to Yarmouth. At Yarmouth, just take Rt. 1 north and this leads you right into the heart of Freeport where, of course, the super L. L. Bean Store is located, along with other well known name brand stores.

Now, let me mention one extra special place you must eat while you are in Freeport. Go to the Harraseeket Lunch and Lobster pound which is on the waterfront. When you leave Yarmouth and go north on Rt. 1, you will come to a hugh wooden sculpture of a Wooden Indian on the right hand side of the road. Turn right at the road there and go straight until you reach the water and you will be at the Harraseeket Lunch and Lobster place. Their Lobster Rolls are delicious, accompanied with a roasted ear of corn and crunchy french fries. If you need to make sure of the directions, just stop along Rt. 1 and go in to one of the stores and someone will give you good directions, I am sure. It is a known landmark in that area.

I hope this information will be of further help to you on your journey. Now, to answer your question, I am staying at the Red Lion Inn on Thursday night, October 6, and I should be in Room 202. It is so kind of you to want to make an expression of thanks but you certainly do not have to do that. Your having a good trip and fun on it gives me all the satisfaction I need. I love to help others enjoy a section of our great country that has meant so much to me.

So, have a safe trip! Be sure and let me know how it all turns out. I will be gone from Oct 6 through the 16th. I will be anxious to hear from you. Email me at kerrygough@comcast.net.

Kerry that all sounds LOVELY...what a wonderful time we are going to have! (except I think I will have to repack my bags, taking out all my zip up pants and replacing them with elasticized waist bands, because I sure aint going to be the same size if I eat all that deevine food!!)I love to cook, so you can imagine how my ears pricked up and my tongue started watering after reading all your tantalising descriptions!
You certainly are a most special person and a fantastic ambassador for New England. I hope your own holiday is just fabulous! So, Vermont, put on your glad rags, especially that "russet mantle", because...here we all come! Thankyou, and thankyou again, for all the help you have given me, Kerry. Be in touch again after the 16th - God bless.

The only thing I can add is the Cabot Annex Store about a mile north of Ben & Jerry's. They have all of their cheese available of tasting. Champlain Chocolates and Green Mountain Coffee Roasters have outlets thewre as well as Vermont Teddy Bear.
