Hi,

I am a great lover of fall (but till now had seen it only on a postcard). This year am visiting VT during fall - between OCtober 5 - October 7 with my wife and 4 year daughter.

Can someone suggest me some activities that can be done like

1)attend a maple syrup extracting session
2) attending some local community events which will help me understand the place better

Hi Jaspal,

There are a ton of outdorr activities you can do in VT. I don't know where you are staying but the best thing to do is look for activities pamphlets at your hotel or ask the front desk when you check in. You can try your luck at a corn maze, go to a maple farm, pumpkin patch, etc. Ben and Jerry's also has tours of their ice cream factory which is great for both the old kids and the young one! I will be staying 1 night in Colchester and 2 nights at Townplace suites in Williston.

will be having a car and need to know from the experts as to

1) which is the best routes to drive through

2) what activities can be done

3) Ben and Jerry - I sent them an email through their website, but they havent responded. been 2 weeks.

The makers of maple syrup hang buckets on their trees in the springtime when the sap is running so I don't think you will see any maple syrup extractions when you visit. Andy wrote a blog piece about it earlier this year. Here's the link: http://www.scenesofvermont.com/blog/?p=161#comments

Am visiting VT from Oman (Middle East) - am an Indian citizen living in Oman currently, and it would be great to see some foliage, especially coming from a desert.

Ben & Jerry's is on route 100 north about 1 mile north of the I-89 exit 10. About 1 mile north of Ben & Jerry's is the Cabot Annex Store where you can sample cheeses and other things. About 1 mile north of them is the Cold Hollow Cider Mill. If you can save these for a rainy day. Best foliage will be in that area and south of there. Route 100 is a favorite drive in Vermont.

Actually, you can "kill two birds with one stone." Ben and Jerry's is just a little way south of Cold Hollow Cider Mill (they are on opposite sides of the road). If you do go to B&J's DO stop at Cold Hollow. You can certainly purchase Maple Syrup (look for the Sunday Brook Farm stuff -- its the best -- I am biased, though, as my Uncle and his son produce it).

For your #2 request I would take a look at ctyanky's thread on Vermont Church Suppers. She mentions one in Richmond on the 7th...that's not too far from where you'll be. Sitting down to eat a chicken pie supper with locals is definitely a way of getting a look at the community.

Will surely get the maple syrup from cold hollow mill (my wife's been telling me to buy it for our cocktails / mocktails and will carry huge quantities home).

Susan - can you kindly send me the link on how to make reservations for the community supper. will surely love to attend one. BTW - I studied in a Catholic school and my daughter is a big big fan of the Christmas series on Barney -- hence we do visit Churches.
