We intend to drive down from New York city this weekend 9/30- 10/1, early Saturday morning to return back Sunday night. This will be our first ever leaf peeping experience. We intend to cover the Berkshires as we move ahead to Vermont. Please give your suggestions as to the routes, off roads and places to make the best of this short 2 day trip. If you feel this is too early , then we can postpone the trip to next weekend and visit N Hampshire this weekend. The point is we have reserved the next 2 weekends solely for the fall foilage viewing and want to make the best of it . Thanks.

The best color I saw last weekend was in northeast Vermont in the Island Pond area. The colors should be good as far down as Craftsbury this weekend. Read my "Northern (gasp) New Hampshire" post in case you want to do that area. Also drive over to Lake Willoughby on route 5a. That lake doesn't need foliage, and if you are not worried about a good dirt road, try the Hinton Hill Road off route 5a next to the community church for a great view.
