Wind and Rain on September 19th

The wind and rain today didn't seem to blow that many leaves off the trees in northeastern Vermont. What about in the rest of the state? Can anyone give a report on their area?

The Northeast Kingdom, up by the Quebec border, is now at about 65% color. The color is very good - much better than last year.

I didn't get to see the trees yesterday because that cold front came through as I was heading to work. But the color this last weekend was less than 50% overall down here.

Spent the last four days on vacation riding around looking for early autumn foliage.

Here's what we noted on our motorcycle journey's of about 500 miles:

Saturday headed north to Eastern Townships of Quebec mountains and valleys in the Sutton to Bromont areas. Rt. 105 from Troy to Richford beginning to turn nicely in the Jay Peak area. Up in Canada in the valleys of the Sutton area beginning to turn. More in the higher elevations of the Sutton Ski Resort and Owl's Head areas.
About 50 percent changed.

Sunday headed south to stay high in the mountains and do the gaps. In the Jeffersonville area on Rt. 15 beginning to turn nicely along the Winoski River area. Headed south on 108 over the Mt. Mansfield Gap just a tint not as bright as expected yet. Stowe beginning. Actually Waterbury was alittle more advanced. As we traveled down 100 to Waitsfield there were pockets of changes in valleys. Over 17 to Bristol colors are starting. It was nice over the Lincoln Gap, Brandon Gap. As we zig zagged back to the Roxbury Gap in the Warren area there were some nice pockets of color. As we headed northeast back towards the Groton, Peacham, Danville area in the afternoon the colors were becoming more intense and you could definately seem the difference. Joe's Pond area was looking good then heading north on 16 up to Craftsbury Area we took some back roads up to Albany. So. Albany road was looking nice. Irasburg back to Newport Center was brighter than the western mountains. About 40 percent.

Monday headed east. Destination: Summit Mount Washington Toll Road. A must do in the auturmn! We had to do it Monday on a picture perfect day. Attention to all motorcycle riders: They will be closing the toll road one day this week we were told due to snow may start to occur on top and become a hazard to motorcyles. Cars will still be permitted until mid-October.

As we headed south down Rt. 5 nice color in the Burke Area towards Lydonville. Rt. 2 east towards New Hampshire was very pretty!
Then it gets better. Once past Lancaster NH! WOW! Rt. 2 towards Gorham was beautiful about 50-60 percent changed!
Rt. 16 south from Gorham to Mt. Washington was very pretty. NH was ahead of VT in color mostly due to higher elevations.

With the 80 degree day Monday made for a delightful day in the NH area. At Mount Washington it was only 78 degrees at the base.
Top 53 degrees and 38 mile an hour winds. Drop dead gorgeous day to be on top!

Later that day traveling back once back in VT, we took 102 north to Island Pond. Nice color in that area through East and West Charlestown.
Rt. 58 over to Lowell is looking good too.

Tuesday stayed locally in the morning in the Newport area. There are pockets of color in the lake area that have changed since Saturday.. With the drop in temperatures the foliage will start to really change. Yesterday afternoon rains didn't do much in our area. However, you can dramatically see just on our mountain the change in the last four days especially overnight.About 50 percent.

Our early autumn foliage tour ended... today back to work and off the road.

Start getting out there... it's Autumn!
