Montgomery's early settlers came primarily from the New England Sates and French Canadians who began arriving in the 1840s. Industry in Montgomery centered on farming.

Montgomery claims to be the Covered Bridge Capital of Vermont with six covered bridges and a seventh just on the town border with Enosburg Falls. The area is noted for its fall foliage, covered bridges, scenic bike routes, alpine and cross country skiing and mountain biking on old logging trails. Access to Long Trail is minutes away and the nearby Trout and Missisquoi rivers are ideal for fishing or canoeing.

There are several good inns in the area, among them the Black Lantern, first built in 1803, the Inn on Trout River, Phineas Swan B& B and the Snow Shoe Lodge and Pub. Restaurants include the Belfry, Bernie's and Trout River Traders.

Numerous organizations are very active in the community and include the Montgomery Historical Society which is now housed in the 1835 Episcopal Church. The building has wonderful glass stained windows and houses a collection of Montgomery artifacts. Other orgainzations are a Quilt Guild, a Recreation Center, a Garden Club and many hiking trails.
